The contest journey in 2021:

The call for innovation project submission started on a very pessimistic note in Nigeria owing to the general lull and fear caused by the global pandemic attacks of Covid-19 on humans and nature prominently from 2020.

Nigeria was only able to nominate 4 innovations out of 8 slots allowable per country in 2021 – owing to poor turn out of producers with quality and competitive innovations with high-impact on society.

We are indeed happy that one of the two shortlisted local e-content projects from Nigeria, #FollowTheMoney, a network of grassroots citizens dedicated to tracking government and international aid spending, which scored high, winning the heart the of the Eminent National Expert for Nigeria during the national pre-selection programme of Programos Foundation also merited same professional and frank decisions of the International grand jurors on the WSA democratic jury to make Nigeria prominent in the winners’ list of best innovation-potential ecosystems of the world 2021. According to the WSA National expert for Nigeria, Mr Amos Emmanuel, #FTM’s co-Producers are: Lucy Abagi and Hamzat Lawal and address SDGs 16 and 17 being “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions”, and “Partnerships for the Goals” respectively in most laudable ways impacting the Nigerian society.

The WSA Young Innovators winner LendanArm is Africa’s representative winner – Lend an Arm is a holistic blood supply solution. They are committed to increasing voluntary blood donation in Nigeria and delivering good quality blood and blood products to patients in dire need, especially those in rural and otherwise hard-to-reach areas of the country. Nigeria suffers from a damaging shortage of blood with over 350, 000 pints of blood needed. People die because of this need. To tackle this murderous menace, they have used high-tech innovation to encourage voluntary donors to increase donations. Producers are: Imodoye Abioro and Tunde Oyebamiji and we can be sure the they did a good job addressing SDGs 3 and 10 qualitatively to redeem Nigeria’s digital society challenges.

The United Nations World Summit Awards Grand and Young Innovators juries recently convened to complete the evaluation and selection exercise of the best local digital impact innovations in the world! International jurors from 6 continents have chosen 40 winners finally in the WSA (senior) category, and 5 winners in the WSYA (junior) category from the previous short-list announced in December 2021.

INNOVATIONS WERE SUBMITTED FROM DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD: WSA is a global nomination based award system. A total of 293 nominations have been submitted by 68 countries by WSA National Experts in 2021.

In the near future, we will be able to drill down participation in the 36 states plus FCT Abuja in Nigeria in the new decade – following the ongoing mandate for state #Innovationbed Digital Citizens Innovation-Capacity Development Incubation-2030 Initiative that has received the implementation and collaboration blessings of Zamfara, Nasarawa, Kano and Edo State Cohorts.

Prior to this stage of releasing WSA 2021 results, there had been the grand jury stage after the Online Jury was concluded with over 50 experts who evaluated and produced a shortlist that the grand jury 2021 had to take final decisions upon by selecting the top best 40 products of the World Summit Awards competition 2021 and 5 best of the WSYA category.

See and download the global winners of the WSA 2021 competition. Kudos to Nigeria’s FollowTheMoney in the senior WSA category, and LendanArm product in the junior WSYA category under health sector and even doing well to representing Africa in the competition in 2021.

Certainly the experience is always awesome when national experts have an opportunity to meet and below we can confirm the countries who were invited into the 2-week of WSA 2021 Grand Jury meetings must have had great fun and new experiences doing the job remotely given the prevalent impact conditions of covid-19 in many parts of the world:
